Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
Arkansas Children’s Hospital
General Description
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children’s
Hospital offer an ACGME accredited fellowship in pediatric endocrinology
that provides comprehensive training in all aspects of inpatient and
outpatient endocrinology and diabetes care. The goal of our program is to
produce academic pediatric endocrinologists, and thus subspecialty residents
will also be expected to pursue scholarly scientific work comprising
clinical and/or basic science research and to disseminate knowledge through
teaching and publication. We adhere to the program requirements for resident
education in pediatric endocrinology as published by the American College
for Graduate Medical Education at
www.acgme.org. Completion of our program will permit the subspecialty
resident to meet all requirements of the Sub-board in Pediatric
Endocrinology of the American Board of Pediatrics.
The three-year training program is divided into approximately 13 clinical
months and 15–21 research / elective months. The block schedule for the
entire training program is weighted toward clinical time in the first year
with more research time in the second and third years. Clinical
responsibilities include both inpatient and outpatient experience and
strictly adhere to the duty hours limitations set forth by the ACGME.
Location
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology is located at Arkansas Children’s
Hospital (ACH), a 280 bed quaternary care facility that is the only
pediatric medical center in the state and one of the ten largest in the
nation. More than 11,440 patients are admitted to ACH each year. There were
252,000 outpatient encounters in 2003 which included 33,775 to our Emergency
Department. There were approximately 3900 outpatient encounters for the
Endocrine Division in 2004. ACH is also home to the new Donald W. Reynolds
PICU, a state-of-the-art 26-bed facility. The Arkansas Children’s Hospital
Research Institute (ACHRI), a not-for-profit corporation owned by ACH, is
located one block south of the main ACH campus. ACHRI contains 85,000 square
feet of laboratory and office space, including a 27,000 square foot
state-of-the-art animal facility. In addition, all clinical faculty of the
Division are also University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) faculty
members, and our academic association with UAMS provides further research
and clinical collaborative opportunities.
Faculty
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology consists of five board-certified
or board-eligible Pediatric Endocrinology faculty members all of whom
actively participate in patient care as well as clinical or basic research:
Dr. John Fowlkes (Division Head), Dr. Stephen F. Kemp, Dr. Kathryn M.
Thrailkill, Dr. Alba E. Morales Pozzo, and Dr. J. Paul Frindik, (Fellowship
Director). Other personnel within the Division include two basic scientists
(R. Clay Bunn, PhD and Charles K. Lumpkin, Jr., PhD), five nurses (two of
whom are CDE’s), and a full time nutritionist who is also a CDE.
