Community Pediatrics emphasizes
service to underserved populations including children with developmental
disabilities and low income, rural, children in foster care. This section in
Pediatrics models collaborative services with partners in the central
Arkansas region as well as rural Arkansas. We work with the Arkansas School
for the Deaf; Arkansas School for the Blind; The Centers for Youth and
Families, a children’s mental health provider; as well as other agencies.
Community Pediatrics is the home
of the UAMS Head Start Program, one of only three Head Start programs in the
country based in an academic health center. Launched in 1965 as a summer
program to prepare children for school, Head Start in Arkansas has grown to
serve over 11,000 children, birth to five, and their families in all 75
counties. The majority of the programs are administered by non-profit
community based agencies in center-based settings predominantly serving
three- and four-year-olds.
