Inpatient Pediatric Services

Activity

The Department of Pediatrics inpatient services make up seven in every ten discharges at Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH).   During the fiscal year 2005-2006, there were 6,813 pediatric discharges from Arkansas Children's Hospital. The average length of stay for this period was 7.4 days. The Department of Pediatrics offers inpatient services, including general pediatrics and the following subspecialty services:

     Center for Children at Risk

     Critical Care Medicine

     Developmental Pediatrics

Gastroenterology

Gynecology

Nutrition

Rehabilitation

Special Admission Units

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) are supported, respectively by, the inpatient services of Critical Care Medicine, Neonatology, and Cardiology. Special Unit admissions for the 2005-2006 fiscal year were: PICU (1,244); NICU (986); and CVICU (472).

Bone Marrow Transplant Service

A total of nine bone marrow transplants were performed in fiscal year 2005-2006 (all autologous).  ACH's bone marrow transplant unit is a member in the International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry.  Also, the ACH stem cell transplant program is a part of the National Marrow Donor Program as an umbrella program of the adult stem cell transplant program at UAMS.  This allows the stem cell transplant program at ACH to have access to stem cell donors around the world.

Transplant Programs

Transplants are performed in three areas - cardiac, renal, and bone marrow.  Primary support for these services is provided by the Cardiology, Nephrology, Hematology/ Oncology, and Immunology sections.  In fiscal year 2005-2006, transplant services performed were:  17 heart, 6 kidney, and 9 bone marrow transplants.

Transports

Two helicopters and three ground ambulances are used to perform inter-hospital transports throughout Arkansas and the surrounding five-state region.  The transports are staff by and medical care provided by Department of Pediatrics physicians.  During fiscal year 2005-2006, 2,192 transports were performed including 1,264 via helicopter, 683 via transport van and 50 high risk OB transports.

ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) Service

ECMO is supported by the department's Neonatology, Cardiology, and Critical Care services.  In fiscal year 2005-2006, patients received 5,139 hours of ECMO.
