Fellowship in Surgical Pathology

Description: The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences offers a one-year fellowship program in diagnostic surgical pathology. University Hospital is the major tertiary referral center for the state of Arkansas. It provides experience in a broad spectrum of diseases through the varying clinical subspecialties including the Arkansas Cancer Research Center and the growing renal and liver transplantation programs. The fellowship provides a broad experience in diagnostic surgical pathology with emphasis in general pathology, oncologic pathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology. Fellows alternate between three rotations.

Hot Seat
The hot seat fellow is responsible for reviewing all surgical resections and biopsies processed by histology daily. The hot seat fellow renders an independent diagnosis and the resident confirms the diagnosis with the fellow on each case following sign-out with the attending. Cases with discrepant diagnoses are re-reviewed with the fellow and attending. This experience is designed to simulate a real-world sign-out experience for the fellow, while not interfering with the resident/attending sign-out.

Consult Service
The consult service has an emphasis on gastrointestinal and liver pathology, hematopathology, and oncologic pathology. The fellow is responsible for previewing each case prior to sign-out. This rotation is designed to provide an in depth exposure to GI/liver pathology and oncologic pathology, including both common and rare diseases.

Gross Room Supervisor/Frozen Section
On this rotation, the fellow is responsible for supervising the gross examination of surgical resection cases by the resident. They are also responsible for proper examination and sectioning of cases sent for intraoperative consult (frozen section). This rotation is designed to improve the fellows’ confidence in frozen section evaluation and to refine their skills in gross examination.

Requirements: 4 years of combined AP/CP training or 3 years of AP only.
