Nephropathology
Renal Pathology Laboratory
Director: Neriman Gokden, MD (501-686-6535)
The renal pathology laboratory and electron microscopy laboratory offer specialized
procedures for the diagnosis of native and transplant kidney biopsies, including
renal biopsy pathology, direct immunofluorescence (e.g. skin, mucous membrane
and lung specimens) and diagnostic electron microscopy. The electron microscopy
laboratory is fully equipped with digital transmission electron microscopy and
scanning electron microscopy.
RENAL BIOPSIES

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS:
For Light Microscopy: Submit tissues in 10% formalin
or 4% paraformaldehyde.
For Immunofluorescence Microscopy: Submit tissues in Michel's fixative.
For Electron Microscopy: Submit tissues in 4% glutaraldehyde. Samples for Electron Microscopy should
not exceed 1mm in dimension because of penetrating abilities of this fixative. Sometimes a
paraffin-embedded specimen can be used, but with some sacrifice of quality. Tissue processing
for electron microscopy requires 2-3 days. Samples can be shipped at ambient temperature and we accept
samples Monday through Friday.
Please provide clinical information, laboratory results and the results of any other studies
to aid in our diagnostic evaluation. We provide result on same day for transplant kidney
biopsies and result with light and immunofluorescence microscopy in 24 hours for native
kidney biopsies. Results are reported by telephone, fax, and a final printed report.
