Welcome to the UAMS Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services website. I hope you will find our site easy to use and informative. This year, our department has undergone some administrative re-organization that I believe will augment our ability to deliver highly specialized and excellent patient care services, as well as improve our residency and fellowship training programs.
Following up upon the Department's "Outstanding Residency Training Program for Large Programs" at UAMS awarded to the AP/CP program in 2005-06, this year the Dermatopathology training program won the "Outstanding Residency Training Program for Small Programs". This year, 100% of our graduates who took the AP/CP boards passed on the first attempt! We continue to be proud of our educational programs at all levels!
Our diagnostic services continue to be a source of strength within the institution, as well as regionally. Our consultation practices in dermatopathology, gastrointestinal pathology and soft tissue pathology continue to grow at a rapid pace and the addition of new faculty with subspecialty interests bodes well for further growth. The department continues to provide care for a diverse patient population, serving the attached Veterans Hospital population and the Arkansas Children's Hospital.
Despite difficult times for researchers to acquire extramural funding, our scientists continue to thrive. Our NIH grant ranking number has improved from #89 to #63 in the past 3 years. We continue to recruit investigators adding another strong dimension to our program.
We are proud of the physical plant of our department which is soon to greatly improve, again. With the completion of the new hospital slated for August 2008, the Clinical Laboratories will be relocated into an entirely new space, resulting in a greatly expanded work area. Further, the new frozen section suite will be close to the surgical suites. In addition, a new cytopathology laboratory is planned for the second tower being built by the Arkansas Cancer Research Center. This will enable cytopathologists immediate proximity to the clinics in which most fine needle aspiration biopsies are performed.
In sum, our department continues to grow, evolve, and thrive. I am proud of where we presently stand and optimistic that the future will only be brighter for the department. Welcome!
