Family Map Training
The Family Map is a new assessment tool designed to be used as an interview during home visits with families to improve outcomes for young children 3 to 5 years old. Identifying family needs and strength is a critical step in the success of early childcare programs to improve outcomes for children. While the Family Map is used to identify needs and strengths, it is also provides a foundation for the development of a productive educator-parent partnership.
The Family Map is: · A comprehensive assessment of the family life of at-risk or special needs preschool children. · A systematic way to identify individual family needs and strengths. · Based on a foundation of research that connects the quality of the family and parenting environment with child outcomes · Developed with input from teachers, administrators, and families. · Consistent with Head Start Outcomes Framework.
Training overview: · Who Needs Training? o While training materials are provided on-line free, we recommend that anyone using the Family Map be trained in a one-day training. · Where can I get the Training Manual? o Training manual is provided free on-line (www.uams.edu/partners/familymap/INSTRUCTIONAL MANUAL) · When and where is the training conducted? o Training is scheduled as needed. The training can be provided at your site with appropriate expenses for the trainer covered. Contact us for more information. · What is the cost of training? o On your site: Costs include any travel expenses incurred by the trainer in addition to the costs below. o In Little Rock, AR: Attendees pay their own travel expenses. Cost for the half - day long training is $750 for groups of 20 participants. Contact Author for more information.
The Family Map Training offers educators/professionals: · 6-8 hours of parent involvement training in the use of the Family Map and basic interview techniques · A strategy to help strengthen the parent-educator partnership · Manual, use of Family Map forms, and practice video · A Certificate of Completion and CEU’s recognized by the Arkansas Department of Education and Arkansas Early Childhood Professional Development Registry Training includes: · Review of the research backing the Family Map Domains · What has been learned from others use of the Family Map · Tips on Effective Interviews with Families · Details of using the Family Map with Families · What to do after the Family Map Interview · Using the Family Map to monitor families and programs
