Family Map Research & Evaluation

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) awarded funding to develop the Family Map as part of the 2004 Head Start-University Partnerships: Measurement Development projects.

The development of the Family Map is summarized in the publication below and includes information on reliability and validity.

Whiteside-Mansell, L., Bradley, R., H., Conners, N. A., & Bokony, P. A. (2007).  The Family Map: Structured interview to identify risks and strengths in head start families. NHSA Dialog: A Research-to-Practice Journal for the Early Intervention Field, 10, 189-209.

Presentations & Publications List

Additional analyses of data from the Family Map have been presented in regional and national conferences.  These include;

·         Using the Family Map to document impacts in Head Start

·         Examining differences in risks across cultural groups (Basic needs)

·         Examining differences in risks across cultural groups (Safety)

·         Comparing risks in urban and rural settings

We recommend asking parents and teachers about the use of the Family Map, particularly during the first year of implementation as a program improvement step.  Here are some of the forms we used with our study:

·         Sample Home Visit Summary

·         Sample Teacher Training Evaluation

·         Sample Teacher Evaluation of Family Map Interview (a)

·         Sample Teacher Evaluation of Family Map Interview (b)

·         Sample Parent Evaluation of Family Map Interview
