The human body contains 206 bones in all. These bones are part of the musculoskeletal system, which includes our muscles and joints, all working together to allow us to perform all of the tasks we do on a regular basis. Unfortunately, some parts of the system don’t always hold up as well as others and require special attention.

The UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is trained to recognize and manage any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, with skilled specialists experienced in treating even the most complex conditions. Their goal is to treat all of their patients, young and old, thoroughly and effectively in order to help them achieve their ultimate levels of strength and function.

UAMS’ orthopaedic surgeons are skilled professionals, dedicated to serving those in need of repair and rehabilitation. All conditions and complaints are treated uniquely; the care needed for each patient is chosen after considering all forms of treatment. For example, Dr. Richard Evans, director of the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery, specializes in a minimally invasive procedure for partial and total joint replacement of the hip and knee. While this form of surgery may not be the right approach for some, it has made dramatic improvements in the lives of the many patients who have undergone it.

The specialists at the Center for Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery specialize in hand and upper extremity injuries and conditions that have not responded to treatment elsewhere. The Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery Center offers comprehensive management of problems of the foot and ankle while the Center for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, under the directorship of Dr. Syed “Ash” Hasan, M.D., provides comprehensive care for patients with acute or chronic disorders of the shoulder and elbow.
