Endowed Chair In
Orthopaedic Surgery |
Alumni, grateful patients, and faculty have contributed more than $2 million to endow the Carl L. Nelson, M.D. Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery.
The investiture ceremony was held at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences on Oct. 10, 2000.
Dr. Nelson was one of the country's premier specialists in hip and knee joint replacement and developed the first practice in Arkansas dedicated solely to joint replacement surgery in 1974.
He gained wide recognition as a surgeon, educator, researcher, and innovator in orthopaedic surgery.
Dr. Nelson's education included a residency at the Cleveland Clinic and the Nuffield Scholarship in the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, England.
He was the only surgeon in Arkansas who was a member of both the Hip and Knee Societies.
Dr. Nelson received numerous awards, including sponsorship by the American
Orthopaedic Association as a professor at the University of Western
Australia in 1997, a recipient of the UAMS
Distinguished Faculty Award in 1999, and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha.
Under Dr. Nelson's guidance, the UAMS Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program developed a reputation as one of the country's finest programs and has graduated more than 100 superbly trained general orthopaedic surgeons with specialties in spine, trauma, foot and ankle, hand, joint reconstruction, and pediatric orthopaedics.
Dr. Nelson's leadership helped the UAMS Orthopaedic Surgery Department grow from a staff of two to 50, including nationally and internationally recognized faculty. Income generated by the Carl L. Nelson Endowed Chair has made it possible to recruit and hire Larry Suva, PhD., as director of
the new Center for Orthopaedic Research. |
