Compliance Oversight

Compliance reviews are oversight activities that assess a research activity’s compliance with appropriate federal regulations, UAMS IRB and institutional policies and procedures, and generally accepted standards regarding the conduct of human subject research.

Compliance reviews are more commonly called “audits,” but the term “audit” doesn’t really capture the whole point of these reviews. Our goals in performing compliance reviews are:

  • to get an idea of how research is being done at UAMS
  • to provide helpful feedback to investigators, their staffs, and the IRB
  • to identify areas in which there’s a need for more education

Investigators don’t often tell us that they find the review, or audit, experience enjoyable. But we do occasionally hear that they found it helpful and informative, and that they wish they had this opportunity when they first started their research careers.
