UAMS recognizes the United States Secretary of Energy,
Dr. Steven Chu, during Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month
As
the first Nobel laureate to serve in a presidential cabinet, Dr. Steven Chu, the
12th United States Secretary of Energy, is committed to a clean
energy economy.In his role as
Secretary of Energy, Dr. Chu oversees the national energy labs, nuclear triggers
on U.S. missiles, cleanup of contaminated nuclear sites, and research on fossil
fuels and clean renewable energy.
Dr. Chu, a Chinese American, was born in St. Louis,
Missouri to Chinese immigrant parents, Ju Chin Chu and Ching Chen Li, who came
to the United States to get their degrees. He
is the second Chinese American to be a member of the U.S. Cabinet.
Dr. Chu grew up on Long Island, New York, where he taught
himself to play tennis and to pole vault. He has said, "I was raised in a family where
education was not merely emphasized, but was our
raison d’etre.Virtually all of our aunts and uncles had Ph.D.'s in science or
engineering, and it was taken for granted that the next generation of Chu's were
to follow the family tradition.
When the dust settled, my two brothers and four cousins collected three MDs,
four Ph.D.s and a law degree.I
could only manage a single advanced degree."
After graduating from high school, Dr. Chu attended the
University of Rochester, where he earned his B.S. in physics and A.B. in
mathematics.He was later awarded a
Ph.D. in physics from the University of California at Berkeley and continued his
post-doctoral work there until he accepted a position with Bell Laboratories in
New Jersey.He later became a
professor of applied physics at Stanford University. It was during his time at Bell Laboratories when Dr. Chu first began to
conduct the experiments to develop
a method to slow and capture atoms for study by using six laser beams and
working with a hot gas of sodium atoms to cool and trap atoms. For his work in this field, Dr. Chu shared the 1997 Nobel Prize for
Physics with Drs. William Phillips and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji.
As a physicist,
energy lab manager and energy efficiency expert, Dr. Chu brings a unique set of
qualifications to his position as Secretary of Energy. He is a vocal advocate for conducting more research into alternative
energy and nuclear power and has emphasized the future role of America's science
students in environmental planning and global initiative.
