Qualifying Events

Following are the Qualifying Events that would allow you to enroll in Medical or Dental insurance after your initial 31-day new employee window.

The deadline is 31 days!

Be sure to contact Human Resources before your 31-day window expires.    We do not have annual open enrollment, therefore you may have to wait for some time – maybe years – before you can enroll in the future.  All enrollment requests will be reviewed on an individual basis to ensure the enrollment is “on account of and consistent with” the event.

Qualifying Events (click here to find out about the life events that may affect your benefits)

The following events may allow you to enroll for the first time and/or to add eligible dependents.

  1. Events that change marital status.   The appropriate legal document must be provided.

    1. Marriage

    2. Death of a spouse

    3. Divorce, Legal separation, annulment

  2. Events that change the number of dependents

    1. Birth of a child

    2. Adoption

    3. Attaining legal custody of a child

  3. Non-voluntary loss of other coverage by the enrollee, dependents, or spouse.

    1. You are covered under another employer’s COBRA plan and the continuation period (usually 18 months) is exhausted.

    2. Spouse loses eligibility for coverage through their employer due to termination, leave of absence or reduction in hours.

    3. Employer contributions toward the other coverage are terminated.

    4. Loss of public-assistance coverage such as Medicaid, ARKids1st.

  4. Change in UAMS employment status that now makes you eligible for coverage

    1. Transfer from temporary job to regular job

    2. Transfer from benefits-ineligible status (such as student worker or graduate assistant) to benefits-eligible status

    3. Increase percent of time worked from less than 50% to 50% or higher.

    4. Change from part-time (at least 50%) to 100% full-time work status.

  5. Court decree requires you, the employee and the parent, to provide coverage for your dependent children.  The appropriate legal document must be provided.

  6. Your spouse and/or children who were living outside the country are moving to the U.S.A.    The appropriate travel or immigration documents must be provided to show data of entry into the U.S.A.

Children should be added to your Dental insurance when they reach age 2.   Our plan actually allows a child to be added at any time until the first of the month following their 3rd birthday.    But if you pre-tax your premium, the IRS doesn’t allow you add your child at any time other than the end of the year.    If your child turns 3 mid-year and you wait until the end of the year to add him or her, you will not be able to because of  IRS pre-tax regulations.   Click here for more details on adding a child to your Dental plan.

Not Not A Qualifying Event

The following are NOT qualifying events:

  • Change of benefits or premium costs under spouse’s plan, causing UAMS’ plan to now be the “better” coverage

  • Separation from spouse that is not legal

  • You now have health problems but waived coverage when you were first hired or otherwise became eligible.

If you leave UAMS and are rehired within 31 days, this is considered a “reinstatement”.   Your termination date will be deleted out of SAP (our computer system) and your coverage will be restored with no break in coverage.
