The F-1 is a non-immigrant visa classification for individuals who are pursuing academic studies at the secondary, post-secondary, undergraduate, and graduate level.  As long as F-1 students are enrolled in a full-time academic program, they remain in valid status for as long as necessary to complete their studies.

F-1 students are allowed to work 20 hours per week on campus during the school year and full-time during vacation/breaks (i.e. Christmas Break, Spring Break, or Summer Vacation) as long as the student will be registered in a full course of study for the coming term without explicit permission from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
