  PBL L.I.V.E. (Learning through Interactive Video Education) resulted from a Fund for Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) Award from the Department of Education to the University of Colorado College of Medicine. This group helped developed the case we used in Small Group Instruction at UAMS 1-11-05.

• At the University of Delaware, you will find information about problem-based courses at the university and articles on PBL.  There is a University of Delaware PBL Clearinghouse which is a collection of problems and articles for teachers from a wide variety of disciplines. Access to the is limited to educators, who must register; registration, however, is free.

  Peruse the problem-based curriculum of Southern Illinois University's School of Medicine; home of Howard Barrows, a PBL pioneer.  School offers training opportunities for faculty and numerous resources for medical school educators.

• Project On The Effectiveness Of Problem Based Learning (PEPBL) can be found at:

  PEPBL is a three year research project that started in March 2000. The project involves two separate but related research exercises. The first is a randomised controlled trial of PBL utilising two post-registration courses for nurses. The second is a systematic review of the effectiveness of PBL that will be registered with one of the national review centres.

More Computer Assisted Clinical Cases

Three computer assisted infectious disease cases have been made available by Neal R. Chamberlain, Ph.D., Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. The cases are designed to help medical students develop  problem solving skills. The cases include a history, physical, laboratory, diagnosis, and treatment sections. The cases are freely available and Dr. Chamberlain only asked that proper attributions be given to the case writer(s).
