Service & Background

Steven Eugene Boone holds an appointment as Professor and serves as Director of the Office of Educational Development. He joined the Department after a long career in management of teaching and research programs. Dr. Boone holds a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas in General-Experimental Psychology, with an emphasis on rehabilitation research and applied behavioral analysis. Prior to that degree, he completed a Master's of Education in Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Arkansas. He is a Licensed Psychologist and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor.

In 1985, Dr. Boone joined the University of Arkansas Rehabilitation Research and Training Center for Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. He served as the Director of Research and Program Coordinator in the RRTC's Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling. Prior to joining the University, he served on the research faculty at UCLA, managing a research-based clinical program focused on mental health rehabilitation of persons with schizophrenia. This work led to the development of assessment and training curricula in interpersonal problem solving, job seeking skills, medication management, as well as training materials on behavior management.

Dr. Boone's research has consistently focused on identifying needs and developing and evaluating resources designed to assist persons with disabilities to meet their needs. His professional career has been externally funded by over thirty million in research and applied training grants from federal agencies such as the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, the National Institute of Health, and the Rehabilitation Services Administration. His work has resulted in multiple multimedia based teaching resources in work-related social/interpersonal skills, job-seeking and job accommodations for persons who are late deafened, hard of hearing, or deaf. Boone has also served in program development and evaluation for numerous state and local programs that serve persons with disabilities.

In addition to teaching graduate level coursework in rehabilitation and research methodology, Boone has conducted over 100 presentations and workshops at national and regional conferences and has authored, co-authored, or edited over 50 chapters, journal articles monographs, or books. He has received awards related to his work form the Arkansas Association for the Deaf, Arkansas Rehabilitation Services Deaf Access Program and the national Self Help for Hard of Hearing Persons. Boone is active in a number of professional rehabilitation and consumer organizations serving deaf and hard of hearing persons. He has held multiple service roles within the University including search committees and a member of Faculty Council.
