Background

Katherine Berry, Ed.D., brings 20 years of higher education experience to her current role in research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Her background includes progressive responsibility within the areas of student affairs, institutional advancement, teaching, consulting, and research.

As a student affairs professional, Berry successfully led global recruitment efforts for Ouachita Baptist University, a small, private liberal arts college in Arkansas ranked for many years as #1 in its category by US News & World Report. Following the achievements of record-breaking enrollments and increased student academic quality, Berry transitioned to a consultant role in enrollment management while completing her doctorate in higher education administration. Her research interest and experience in leadership led to service in fundraising, development and institutional advancement. As Director of Development at Ouachita Baptist University and later as Vice Chancellor for Advancement at the open-admissions, public institution, the University of Arkansas at Monticello, Berry led teams to meet and exceed record-setting fundraising, development and advancement goals.

In the classroom, Berry’s passion for teaching is demonstrated across the age spectrum. From teaching toddlers in Sunday School to teaching undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral-level students, Berry continues to grow as an educator. Current interests in teaching and research include curriculum development and evaluation for medical residents, medical students, and faculty development for the health professions. Berry currently serves on a federally funded grant providing curriculum development for vocational rehabilitation counselors. As an educational consultant in Graduate Medical Education with the UAMS Department of Surgery, Berry is focused on the use of appropriate research process and methodologies, the importance of reflection for learners and teachers, and developing, evaluating and improving evidence-based educational practices.

Professional service includes university committee participation and ad hoc project teams. On the national level, Berry has served as a proposal reviewer for The Generalist in Medical Education (TGME) annual conference. As a community-minded civic volunteer, Berry has served numerous groups and causes, the most satisfying of which has been as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer providing a consistent adult mentor and advocacy presence for children in foster care.
