About our Program
Our residency program in the
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arkansas for
Medical Sciences is a four-year graduate program designed to provide residents
with broad knowledge and clinical skills in all aspects of obstetrics and
gynecology and women's health. The program fulfills all requirements established
by the
National Residency Review Committee (RRC) and currently has full
accreditation through the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
(ACGME).
Our faculty includes
full-time academic physicians and scientists along with a dedicated staff of
other health care providers. Our commitment to graduate medical education
encourages residents to fully participate as members of the health care team.
Clinical training occurs through services provided to a large, diverse patient
base while other training occurs through weekly conferences including department
grand rounds and case presentation conferences, along with a monthly journal
club, designed to enhance the critical evaluation of the literature and
reinforce evidence-based medicine.
The overall goal of our
program is to create an environment where residents can acquire a comprehensive
knowledge of obstetrics and gynecology to prepare for general practice,
subspecialty practice, or a career in academic medicine.
Our attitudes toward
teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect are vital elements to our successful
educational experience.
There are a total of 16
Obstetric and Gynecology categorical residency positions. Two fourth year
residents are selected to be chief residents each year. One serves as the
scheduling chief and oversees all scheduling issues including night call
schedule and holiday call schedule. The other serves as the administrative chief
and is the representative for the residents. This person attends meetings with
the program director and other faculty members to discuss residency related
issues.
The residency program is
based at University Hospital, the main teaching institution for the University
of Arkansas for Medical Sciences medical school. It is located on the UAMS
campus and is connected to the medical school along with the Rockefeller Cancer
Institute, Outpatient Clinics and Outpatient Surgery Center. Residents also have
clinical services at Baptist Medical Center, St. Vincent’s Infirmary, and
Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Outpatient care is primarily based at the
University Women’s Clinic located 2 blocks away from University Hospital.
Residents are allowed three
weeks of vacation per year. They may also take up to 12 days of paid sick leave.
Maternity leave may include a maximum of 5 weeks which is made up of 12 unused
sick days plus 3 weeks unused vacation. Time beyond that is without
compensation. Paternity Leave includes one day of sick leave for the birth
followed by unused vacation time. Any time beyond that is without pay.
