ITEM TYPE 0:  Standard Single Mark Multiple Choice Item

Any item left blank on the ITEM TYPE sheet is assumed to be type 0.  If no Item Type sheet is submitted, all items are assumed to be type 0.

Leave all response circles blank on the Item Type sheet for Type 0 items.

There should be one mark on the KEY sheet for each type 0 item, otherwise the question will be made invalid (Item Type 5) by the test scoring program.

The item is scored by comparing the student's single mark with the single correct answer indicated on the KEY sheet.  If they are different, he receives no credit.  If they are identical, he gets full credit for as many points as were assigned by the POINTS sheet for the question, or 1 point if no POINTS sheet was used.

Note that an item designed such that the student is instructed to "Mark D if 2 and 4 are correct" or "E if all of the above", is still a single response item, Type 0, because only a single mark is required to indicate the correct answer.  However, items using this kind of "coded" response (called type K by the Board of Medical Examiners) should be avoided, since they are not as valid as using Item Type 1 (called type X by the National Board), described below.
