Item Descriptions

Preparation of the ITEM TYPE sheet:

If an "ITEM TYPE" sheet is not submitted, all questions are assumed to be of ITEM TYPE 0, that is, standard single response multiple choice.  Do not submit an "ITEM TYPE" sheet for tests scored using Option 2 (Special score entry only).

On the "ITEM TYPE" control sheet, the OTS course number should be filled in, the initials must read "ITE", and the ID must be 999999998.  The special score grid should be left blank on the "ITEM TYPE" sheet.

Then, an item type may be assigned to each question by darkening the circle(s) for that question corresponding with the letter code used to designate that item type.  The different item types available are discussed on the following pages.

ONE SPECIAL NOTE OF WARNING:

The last item on the test cannot have a blank response on the KEY sheet.  For Item Types 1, 4, and 5 a blank response on the KEY is acceptable, as long as it is not the last item on the test.  A blank response on the KEY sheet for type I indicates that the correct response is indeed to leave the item blank.  However, in order to determine the number of items on an exam the test scoring program counts through the last non-blank item on the KEY.  If an instructor makes the last item a bonus (Type 4) or invalid (Type 5) item on the "ITEM TYPE" sheet, for instance, and leaves the last item blank on the KEY (thinking that whatever is marked on the key for that item is meaningless anyway), then the scoring program will fail to count that last item as being on the test.  Therefore, please remember the following:

  1. Never have a Type 1 item as the last item on a test, if the correct response to the item is a blank.
  2. If the last question on a test is a Type 4 or Type 5 item, always indicate an answer on the KEY sheet.
