The University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is faced with a great challenge: training a
sufficient number of health care professionals to meet Arkansas' growing health
care demands. In response to this challenge, UAMS is establishing
UAMS-Northwest, a regional campus in Northwest Arkansas, to expand the
University's capability to train physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other
health care professionals.
As shortages in health
care workers are projected to worsen in the coming years, academic health
science campuses across the nation are developing strategies to increase the
supply of health care workers. The UAMS central campus and regional
UAMS programs that host clinical education for students and medical residents
are at capacity or are unable to accommodate a sufficient number of new
students. At UAMS, a regional campus is the optimal method for increasing
student enrollment.
The establishment of the
UAMS-Northwest campus will result in additional medical residents and health
care professionals in Northwest Arkansas, which will lead to improved access to
patient care in area clinics and hospitals and the ability of educational
institutions to deliver on the mission of education and community outreach.
