PROCEDURE FOR ANOSCOPY

 

PURPOSE:    To aid in the visualization of the lower bowel

 

EQUIPMENT: 

  1. Anoscope

  2. Disposable gloves

  3. Fiberoptic light source

  4. 4X4's

  5. Enema/fleets (*if ordered)

  6. Lubrication jelly

                 

NURSING  ACTION:

  1. Explain procedure to patient.

  2. Instruct or assist to administer fleets enema 15 to 30 minutes prior to procedure.

  3. Provide patient/family discharge instructions and follow-up care.

  4. Inform of follow-up appointment.

  5. Document type of procedure.

PROCEDURE STEPS:  

  1. Set up equipment on Mayo stand.
  2. Instruct patient to remove clothing from waist down.
  3. Position on left side on exam table and cover with sheet.
  4. Assist physician as needed.
  5. Assist patient with hygiene as needed following procedure.
  6. Assess for presence of pain, bleeding or other adverse reaction.
