PROCEDURE FOR
CYSTOSCOPY (WATER)
PURPOSE:
To
visualize the urethra, prostatic urethra, and bladder by means of a tubular
lighted telescope lens
To inspect bladder
wall directly for tumor, stone, ulcer, etc.
To see configuration
and position of ureteral orifices
To remove calculi
from urethra and bladder
EQUIPMENT:
LENS
Cytoscopes
0 degree
2 sheaths #17 and #21
30 degree
2 obturators
70 degree
2 bridges
3 way stop cock
Additional equipment if retrograde is done:
Sterile gloves
Obtain KUB
1 liter sterile normal
saline and tubing
8FR cone tip catheter
Sterile bowl
20 ml syringe
Lubricating jelly
Meglutamine 60% - 1 vial
Prep solution
Sterile cup
Cysto pack
Pollack Catheter
NURSING ACTION:
-
Explain
procedure to patient.
-
Vital signs
pre-procedure
-
Document procedure
completed and by whom.

Assess patient's
tolerance of procedure.
-
If biopsy obtained,
ensure that specimen is properly labeled and sent to pathology in formalin
with the appropriate request form completed by the physician.

Give patient/family
discharge instructions.
PROCEDURE STEPS:

Confirm consent signed.

Give pre-op
medication if prescribed.
-
Prepare
equipment.
-
Provide patient
gown and position on cysto table.
-
Prep-drape
patient using sterile technique (warm water, hibiclens).
-
Assist patient as
needed.
-
Assist patient
from table after procedure.
