PROCEDURE FOR INCISIONAL LINE CARE OF ENT PATIENTS

PURPOSE: To facilitate wound healing and prevent infection.

EQUIPMENT:

  1. Cotton tip applicators
  2. Antiseptic solution as ordered by physician
  3. Bacteriocidal ointment as ordered by physician
  4. Normal Saline

NURSING ACTION:

PROCEDURE STEPS:

  1. Explain procedure to patient and educate for discharge home.

KEY POINT:  Decreases patient’s anxiety and enhances learning.

  1. Assess incision line for redness, adherence, edema, drainage or bleeding.
  2. Moisten cotton tip of applicator with antiseptic solution and gently clean all visible incision lines.
  1. Rinse incision lines with cotton tip applicator moistened with normal saline.

KEY POINT:  Certain antiseptics can be an irritant if allowed to remain on wound                          and skin.

  1. Apply a thin coat of bacteriocidal ointment to suture lines with applicator.

KEY POINT:  Ointment will hinder infection growth.
