PROCEDURE FOR INCISIONAL LINE CARE OF ENT PATIENTS
PURPOSE:
To facilitate wound healing and prevent infection.
EQUIPMENT:
- Cotton tip applicators
- Antiseptic solution as ordered by physician
- Bacteriocidal ointment as
ordered by physician
- Normal Saline
NURSING ACTION:
PROCEDURE STEPS:
- Explain procedure to patient and educate for discharge home.
KEY POINT:
Decreases patients anxiety and enhances learning.
- Assess incision line for redness, adherence, edema, drainage or bleeding.
- Moisten cotton tip of applicator with
antiseptic solution and gently clean all visible
incision lines.
- Rinse incision lines with cotton tip applicator moistened with
normal saline.
KEY POINT:
Certain antiseptics can be an irritant if allowed to remain on
wound
and skin.
- Apply a thin coat of bacteriocidal ointment
to suture lines with
applicator.
KEY POINT:
Ointment will hinder infection growth.
