PROCEDURE FOR CYSTOGRAM
PURPOSE: Instillation of radiopaque fluid through a catheter into the bladder to
outline the bladder wall and evaluate ureterovesical valves for reflux and assess bladder
outlet
EQUIPMENT:
-
Sterile bowl
-
2 bottles of radiopaque dye (20cc)
-
Foley catheter 16
-
Asepto syringe
-
Sterile gloves
-
Radiology request
NURSING ACTION:
PROCEDURE STEPS:
- Explain procedure to patient.
- Assist the patient into a gown.
- Have the patient lie flat on table; call x-ray for
pretest KUB.
- Insert Foley catheter following procedure in Lippincott
p. 594-596.
- Prepare dye and normal saline (half and half).
- Assist the physician with insertion of the dye into the
bladder.
- X-ray will take films at physician's
request throughout the procedure.
- Empty bladder and remove catheter.
