PROCEDURE FOR CYSTOGRAM

PURPOSE: Instillation of radiopaque fluid through a catheter into the bladder to outline the bladder wall and evaluate ureterovesical valves for reflux and assess bladder outlet

EQUIPMENT:

  1. Sterile bowl

  2. 2 bottles of radiopaque dye (20cc)

  3. Foley catheter 16

  4. Asepto syringe

  5. Sterile gloves

  6. Radiology request

NURSING ACTION:

PROCEDURE STEPS:

  1. Explain procedure to patient.
  2. Assist the patient into a gown.
  3. Have the patient lie flat on table; call x-ray for  pretest KUB.
  4. Insert Foley catheter following procedure in Lippincott p. 594-596.
  5. Prepare dye and normal saline (half and half).
  6. Assist the physician with insertion of the dye into the bladder.
  7. X-ray will take films at physician's request throughout the procedure.
  8. Empty bladder and remove catheter.
