PROCEDURE FOR ADMINISTRATION OF INTRAVESICAL CHEMOTHERAPY

PURPOSE: Treatment of superficial Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the bladder

EQUIPMENT:

  1. I & O catheter tray
  2. Chemotherapy drawn up in Toomey syringe
  3. Chemo waste receptacle - yellow bag

NURSING ACTION:

PROCEDURE STEPS:

  1. Explain procedure to patient. If possible, provide patient with written instructions before day of chemotherapy is to start. (See teaching handout.)
  2. Provide patient with a gown and have patient to undress.
  3. Assess patient for possible UTI. Patient will not be treated with chemo until clear. Microscopic UA is performed by physician in the clinic.
  4. Prep and catheterize patient. After all urine has drained, instill chemotherapy and remove catheter.
  5. Patient must remain in clinic for 1 hour for observation for possible side effects on 1st dose.
  6. Patient is to retain chemo for 2 hours.
  7. Provide patient with instructions on proper handling of urine to avoid environmental damage. (See teaching handout.)
  8. Instruct patient to report any complications or problems.
  9. All chemo contaminated items will be placed in yellow bag for proper disposal by housekeeping.
