M. NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES
General responsibilities of nursing personnel who are direct patient care providers
are delineated in job descriptions/performance appraisals, orientation competency
checklist, and unit specific checklist. When expected behaviors are not clear as a result
of medical orders, nurses are expected to resolve any concerns (Addendum M.1).

- Processes to maintain competency may include attendance at staff meetings, new
product/equipment training, on-going education, annual mandatory education activities,
performance evaluation, and monitoring of quality assessment and improvement findings
(Addendum N.1).
- Overall competency is assessed annually through performance evaluation by the immediate
supervisor.
- Documentation of competencies are located in 1) Personnel Files and 2) Department/Unit
Databases. Department/Unit Competency Databases are accessible to all staff responsible
for assignments of clinical staff.
5. Annual Competencies for managers/directors/support personnel are embedded in the
Annual Performance Appraisal Tool.
