M.     NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES

General responsibilities of nursing personnel who are direct patient care providers are delineated in job descriptions/performance appraisals, orientation competency checklist, and unit specific checklist. When expected behaviors are not clear as a result of medical orders, nurses are expected to resolve any concerns (Addendum M.1).

  1. Processes to maintain competency may include attendance at staff meetings, new product/equipment training, on-going education, annual mandatory education activities, performance evaluation, and monitoring of quality assessment and improvement findings (Addendum N.1).
  2. Overall competency is assessed annually through performance evaluation by the immediate supervisor.
  3. Documentation of competencies are located in 1) Personnel Files and 2) Department/Unit Databases. Department/Unit Competency Databases are accessible to all staff responsible for assignments of clinical staff.

5. Annual Competencies for managers/directors/support personnel are embedded in the Annual Performance Appraisal Tool.
