SUBJECT: PROCESS FOR EMPLOYEES WHO FAIL TO COMPLETE REQUIRED COURSES/COMPETENCIES
SOURCE: Policy Standards, Section K, Selection/Retention/Development/Evaluation/Credentialing of Nursing Personnel

If an employee fails to satisfactorily complete a course or competency required in the clinical area of work, the employee may transfer to an area where the course is not required or may re-take the course at the next available time it is offered.  Tuition and fees associated with re-taking the course may be paid for at the discretion of the manager, but the employee will be required to use benefit time to cover for the days of the course.  If the employee is unsuccessful in passing the course a second time, he/she must apply to transfer to an area where the course is not a work requirement.

Failure of an employee to attend a mandatory course or competency, will result in a verbal warning, unless prior arrangements have been made with the CSM.  Following the verbal warning, the employee will be expected to complete the mandatory course or competency within 30 days when this may be accomplished with assistance from Staff Education and/or the Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Clinician.  If the class or competency requires attendance of a formal class in Staff Education, the employee must attend the next scheduled class.   Failure to complete mandatory requirements will result in progressive discipline.

Orientation for LPN's is customized due to low volume of LPN's in system.
