Governing Rules |
Insertion and removal of Peripherally Inserted
Central Catheters (PICC) - catheters inserted via peripheral vein with the
tip presiding in the vena cava.
- May be done only by RNs who provide documentation
of successful completion of an organized program of study which is
approved by a nationally recognized accrediting board (in this case the
program is approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's
Commission on Accreditation) that provides didactic instruction and a
competency skills check-off. These items will be placed in the
employee's personnel file.
- RNs must demonstrate the skill in the clinical
setting under supervision by a Attending MD prior to independent
performance of the insertion and removal. A clinical competency
check-off based on ASBN guidelines should be completed both initially and
annually and placed in the employee's personnel file and training tracker.
- RNs who insert and remove PICC lines will follow
specified procedures.
- RNs authorized to insert and remove PICC lines must
have this skill specifically listed in their job specific competencies in
the training tracker.
