SUBJECT: ACCOMPANIMENT OF PATIENTS OUT OF PATIENT CARE UNITS FOR DIAGNOSTIC OR THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS.
SOURCE: Policy Standards, Section J, Patient Transport

All patients transported by unlicensed personnel only will be signed in and out of the patient care unit and diagnostic or therapeutic departments. Patients on oxygen will not be transported using tanks with less than 1.5 hours of available oxygen. Patients on portable oxygen who are waiting for diagnostic/therapeutic interventions will be evaluated every 15 minutes by the personnel in the receiving department to assure continued oxygen support. Clinical Programs Policy MS 4.14 - Transporting Patients with Oxygen

Critical or unstable patients requiring transport will be accompanied by a RN of the sending department if the department patient census and acuity allows.

In the event staffing is inadequate to allow an RN to accompany and remain with critical patients, the CDF, Clinical Service Manager or Assistant Director of Nursing will be notified and attempts will be made to acquire additional staffing or designate an RN or other appropriate licensed health care professional to assist with the transport. Clinical Programs Policy MS 4.12 - Transport of Patients from Patient Care Unites and the Emergency Department for Diagnostic or Therapeutic Interventions

Patients requiring such transport services include, but are not limited to those who are hemodynamically compromised and/or have potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmia.

Mini-patient care summaries will be printed and placed in front of chart prior to transport to non-patient care units.
