Scholastic Rules and Regulations

To be eligible for graduation from the College of Pharmacy, a student must demonstrate to the Faculty that he/she is adequately and satisfactorily prepared to practice the profession of Pharmacy as a Doctor of Pharmacy. To guarantee accomplishment of this goal, the student must make satisfactory progress toward completion of requirements for the degree sought while attending this College.

  1. In order to graduate, a student must attain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better.
  2. To advance to the next didactic course, a student must successfully complete their current course and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better.
  3. To advance to the clerkships, a student must successfully complete all didactic courses and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better. No course may be attempted more than two times.
  4. A student who has repeated a course and removed a grade of "F" and then earns a grade of "F" in any subsequent didactic course shall be dismissed from the College of Pharmacy.
  5. Failure to meet these requirements for scholastic progression will result in dismissal from the College of Pharmacy.

Didactic Courses

"F" indicates failure of a course. A student who fails a didactic course shall be withheld from any further scheduled course until the failed course is repeated.

"I" (Incomplete) is assigned when the student for reasons sufficient to the Didactic Coordinator, has not been able to complete some vital portion of the didactic course. If the incomplete work is not made up within six months following the scheduled end of that course, or if arrangements for completing the work are not made with the Didactic Coordinator, within the six months following the assignment of an incomplete grade, the grade will become an "F" unless an extension of time is granted by the NTPDP Director.

"W" indicates withdrawal from a didactic course. A "W", or administrative withdrawal, will be assigned when a student has enrolled in a course, taken no exams, and passed the deadline for completing the course as determined by the Didactic Coordinator.

If the student withdraws or passes the deadline for a course and has taken one or more exams and has a passing average grade on the exam(s), a "WP" (Withdrawn Passing) will be placed on the record and no grade points or hours will be included in the cumulative computations. A grade of "WP" allows the student to repeat the course in which the "WP" was received, or some part of that course as designated by the NTPDP Director.

If the student withdraws or passes the deadline for completion of a course and has a failing average on one or more exams at the time, a "WF" (Withdrawn Failing) will be recorded, and this grade will be counted as an "F" in all computations. With a grade of "WF" the student must repeat the same course. If the student receives a second "WF" or an "F" grade, the student will be dismissed from the NTPDP.

Rules Pertaining to the Clerkships:

"F" A student who fails a clerkship shall be withheld from any further scheduled clerkship until the failed clerkship is repeated at the earliest available vacancy.

"WF" A student who withdraws at any time during a clerkship and is failing at the time of the withdrawal will be given a "WF". The student must repeat the same type of clerkship, required or elective, (e.g. adult medicine, ambulatory care). If the student receives a second "WF" or an "F" grade, the student will be dismissed from the College of Pharmacy. A student may repeat only one experiential clerkship to remove a grade of "F" (failing grade) or "WF" (withdraw failing). A second "F" or "WF" in any other experiential clerkship will result in dismissal from the College of Pharmacy.

"WP" A student who withdraws at any time during a clerkship and at that time has a passing grade as judged by the preceptor will receive a grade of "WP". The student may repeat the clerkship in which the "WP" was received, some part of that as designated by the preceptor, or any other clerkship so long as the student meets the experiential requirements for graduation.

Withdrawal

A student who wishes to leave the College of Pharmacy's Nontraditional Pharm.D. Pathway voluntarily must notify the College of their intentions and have a Petition for Withdrawal from Registration accepted by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The Pathway Coordinator may grant an Administrative Withdrawal. Students who fail to withdraw officially will receive "W", "WP" or "WF" grades in the courses for which they are registered but fail to complete.

Scholastic Non-Cognitive Performance Evaluation

Scholastic non-cognitive performance is evaluated on the basis of certain demonstrated characteristics that are important to individuals preparing for a career in Pharmacy. Characteristics included in these evaluations are attentiveness, demeanor, maturity, cooperation, inquisitiveness, responsibility and respect for authority. Students shall receive a grade of "Outstanding" or "Inadequate" when appropriate. The lack of either grade indicates that the student has been judged to possess the demonstrated characteristics or that contact with the student has been insufficient to allow evaluation. Faculty members of each course in which the student is enrolled will make evaluations.

If the student receives two (2) or more grades of "Outstanding," the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will notify the student in writing of the fact, and will place a letter of commendation in the student’s file.

If the student receives the grade of "Inadequate" in two (2) or more separate situations or incidents, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will undertake the following action (in the case of a serious violation, a single grade of "Inadequate" will suffice): (1) notify the student in writing that he/she has received an excessive number of "Inadequate" evaluations; (2) require the student to arrange a formal interview within one week with the individuals(s) submitting the written report(s); and (3) will forward to the Scholastic Standing Committee the results of this interview, including the student’s explanation for his/her behavior.

The Scholastic Standing Committee may choose any or several of the following: (1) take no further action; (2) counsel the student in writing only; (3) interview and counsel the student; (4) interview and counsel the student and place him/her on leave of absence for an interval to be recommended by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and approved by the Scholastic Standing Committee; (5) interview and counsel the student and place him/her on scholastic non-cognitive probation for an interval to be recommended by the Associate Dean forAcademic Affairs and approved by the Scholastic Standing Committee; (6) interview the student and recommend the student repeat the entire academic year; or (7) interview the student and recommend his/her dismissal from the College.
