Faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery have expertise in various
subspecialties, including seizure surgery, brain implants, pediatric
neurosurgery and neuro-oncology, including brachytherapy and radiation surgery.
Faculty are also experienced in neuro-endocrinology and disorders affecting the
spine and spinal cord. Special services include pain management, peripheral and
cranial nerve surgery and treatment of vascular disease.
State-of-the-art neurosurgical equipment, including intraoperative
electrophysical monitoring, is used at the UAMS Medical Center and its
affiliates, Arkansas Children's Hospital and the Central Arkansas Veterans
Healthcare System, and neurosurgical intensive care units exist at both adult
hospitals.
The department's Center for Skull Base Surgery, under the direction of
world-renowned neurosurgeon Ossama Al-Mefty, M.D., is a resource that has drawn
patients regionally, nationally and internationally.
