Neurosurgery

Faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery have expertise in various subspecialties, including seizure surgery, brain implants, pediatric neurosurgery and neuro-oncology, including brachytherapy and radiation surgery. Faculty are also experienced in neuro-endocrinology and disorders affecting the spine and spinal cord. Special services include pain management, peripheral and cranial nerve surgery and treatment of vascular disease.

State-of-the-art neurosurgical equipment, including intraoperative electrophysical monitoring, is used at the UAMS Medical Center and its affiliates, Arkansas Children's Hospital and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, and neurosurgical intensive care units exist at both adult hospitals.

The department's Center for Skull Base Surgery, under the direction of world-renowned neurosurgeon Ossama Al-Mefty, M.D., is a resource that has drawn patients regionally, nationally and internationally.
