Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Graduate Track

During the last 35 years, research related to the nervous system has become progressively interdisciplinary. The resultant cross-fertilization of concepts and techniques has accelerated the acquisition of knowledge, profoundly enhanced the interpretation of experimental findings, spurred creative investigations, and fostered the evolution of an interdisciplinary academic culture in neuroscience.

The mission of our Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Track is to provide gifted graduate students:

  • A broad background in basic neurobiology,

  • In-depth experience in one of several participating academic disciplines,

  • Extensive training in the application of modern experimental methods to fundamental problems in neuroscience, and

  • A mechanism to monitor and recognize their accomplishments in neuroscience

The participating faculty consists of a cadre of over 30 well-trained neuroscientists that work on the UAMS campus or at the nearby Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the National Center for Toxicological Research. Current year grant support for our faculty is estimated at over $8.7 million. Our faculty members have expertise in most areas of modern neuroscience including vertebrate neurophysiology, membrane biophysics, molecular neurobiology, neuropharmacology, neurotoxicology, neuroendocrinology, behavioral pharmacology, neurotrauma, developmental neurobiology and systems neurobiology.

Our graduate students are admitted through the following graduate programs:
