Research Facilities

The Department of Neurobiology and Developmental Sciences occupies approximately 20,000 square feet of laboratory space. Additional research space for the department is housed in the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, the Biomedical Research Center, and the Barton Research Building. Extramural grant support for full-time faculty members in the Department of Neurobiology and Developmental Sciences totaled more than $4 million for fiscal year 2003. A variety of equipment allows a breadth of research possibilities. Included are laboratories equipped for in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology, tissue culture, biochemistry, molecular biology, image analysis, and electron microscopy (described below) In addition, the department occupies a 12,000-square-foot state-of-the-art teaching facility for gross anatomy  The department is home to two campus research centers: UAMS Center for Neuroscience Research , and the Center for Translational Neuroscience. The library of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences contains approximately 172,000 books and bound journal volumes, and has 949 print and 2093 electronic journal subscriptions.

Electron Microscopy Facility

The facility houses a JEOL 100CX transmission-electron microscope that is available to examine fixed tissues for cellular detail or signs of change that may indicate differentiation or pathology. Other applications include negative staining of viruses, freeze fracture of cell membranes and immunohistochemistry at the ultrastructural level. Direct visualization of the specimen is possible on a screen and a permanent image can be captured on photographic film. Because film can store such a great amount of detail it remains the most suitable medium to store images. Images can be digitized from film for later analysis with a variety of computer programs. The facility maintains the scope and adjoining darkroom. Arrangements can be made to prepare and analyze samples, and advice is given free. Film and photographic chemicals will be provided at cost.

Access to the Facility

The facility is available to UAMS faculty and technicians provided that billing arrangements have been made and they undergo a short training session. An initial training session takes one hour, to familiarize users with the basic operation of the scope. Non-UAMS users are invited to use this facility, but some restrictions may apply.

Location and Prices

The facility is located on the first floor of the Barton Research Building. The facility is open during business hours, 9:00 am to 5:00 PM. The facility is closed weekends and holidays. All user time should be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. There is a $40 per beam hour charge to faculty. Also, a $40 charge will be made for the initial training period and the first hour of beam time is free.
