Major Interests Disorders of the reticular activating system and sleep, schizophrenia, depression, PTSD, spinal cord injury
Research Interests Early work on the control of locomotion centered on a region of the posterior midbrain that is part of basal ganglia circuitry, but is also involved in sleep-wake regulation. From this research sprang two main lines of investigation, 1) Disorders of the Reticular Activating Systsem (RAS), including schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, depression, Alzheimer's Disease, and sleep disorders, and 2) Disorders of motor control, including Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, and Spinal Cord Injury. Dr. Garcia-Rill is Director of the Center for Translational Neuroscience, a division of the Department of Neurobiology & Dev. Sci. and research arm of the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neuroscience Institute, at which novel treatments for the treatment of spinal cord injury are being developed under the Spinal Cord Injury Mobilization Program.
