UAMS-Neurology Residency Training Program Policy on Resident Recruitment and Appointment

This policy fully adheres to the below specified institutional policy (see appendix) and is complete with the supplement specifying the procedure and criteria used by the Department of Neurology

Supplement specifying procedure and criteria used by the Department of Neurology:

Criteria:

1. Strong interest in Neurology and evidence of commitment for completing the entire training program.

2. Submission of complete application (see attachement). Incomplete applications will be returned without review.

3. Strong academic credentials: Applications with USMLE scores below 80 in both USMLE step 1 and USMLE step 2 will be rejected.

4. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English as determined during the interview, standard tests, and review of the application material.

Procedure:

  1. We do not accept application from any source except the match system
    PGY 1 has to match with San Francisco match as well as the NRMP
    We do accept foreign medical graduates
    Applicants may request information by mail, electronic mail or by telephone.
     

  2. The program director and chairman review the applications and select candidates for interview.Application deadline: December 31st.
     

  3. Interview Process: Resident Selection Committee (Chairman, Program Director, Vice-chairman, VA Neurology Service Chief) interviews applicants on Fridays November through January. Evaluation forms are filled out by each interviewer judging the applicant on interest in neurology, professional background, personality and attitude, proficiency of communication in English. The candidates are given an overview of the program by the program director in a joint session. The candidates attend the grand rounds in the morning and have lunch with residents. The interview concludes in the afternoonwith a tour of the facilities and work environment given by a resident. A copy of the latest version  of Gradual Medical Education Policies of UAMS along with departmental policies on terms and conditions of employment (such as pre-employment drug tests) is given to the candidate who signs a form documenting that he/she has received the information.  The candidates are responsible for the travel and lodging expenses.
     

  4. Resident Selection Committee collectively ranks interviewed applicants in order of preference. The ranking is submitted to Neurology Matching Program for selection by computer in February of each year.
     

  5. Contracts, along with information and supporting documents for various certification requirements and visa material  (if applicable) are sent to the applicant in a timely fashion.
     

  6. Failure to obtain proper visa, valid ECFMG certificate, IAP-66, and ACLS certification by the start of the residency period ( July 1) could result in loss of the residency position:

a. It is the sole responsibility for the International Medical Graduate to obtain the proper visa, valid ECFMG certificate, and IAP-66 form.

b. It will not be possible for an International Medical Graduate to begin the residency program until proper visa, valid ECFMG certificate, and IAP-66 form has been obtained.

c. It is mandatory that all residents (PGY1 - PGY4) obtain ACLS certification before July 1. (The ACLS certification training takes place at the end of June. The registration fee will be paid for by the UAMS Department of Neurology.)
