The University Campus
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences campus is located in the center of Little Rock and is the center of medical education for the state of Arkansas. The graduate programs on this campus are the only ones in the state offering advanced degrees in the biomedical sciences. The campus is comprised of the Graduate School, College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Allied Health Sciences, and School of Public Health. The College of Medicine is the only Medical College in Arkansas and is in a major stage of growth. Currently, a new 100,000 square foot Arkansas Biosciences Institute research building and a 10 story Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurological Science Institute building are under construction.
In just 10 years, UAMS has risen from 121st of all U.S. medical schools in extramural funds obtained to 69th. It is listed among the top U.S. College of Medicines in its rate of growth and is the fastest growing medical sciences campus in the South. World- class scientists and physicians continue to be recruited to UAMS, facilitating this dramatic rise and providing new scientific and educational opportunities. The new Dean of the College of Medicine, E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A ., has made research and the establishment of UAMS in the top third of the U.S. medical schools as his highest priority,
Located just ten minutes away from UAMS is the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), a 150-acre campus which offers undergraduate and specific post-graduate degrees.
Many students live in an on-campus dormitory, but ample housing within walking distance is readily available to students. A Health and Fitness Center, giving reduced rates to students, is also within a quarter mile of campus. Little Rock:
Little Rock
is
centrally located in Arkansas and is the largest city and seat of government and
business in the state. With a population of about 250,000 people, the city has
the advantages of a larger city but the feel of a town. Within literally minutes
of campus are the shops and restaurants of the Hillcrest Historic District, the downtown business,
theater and art centers, and the expanding neighborhoods and shopping of west Little Rock. Cultural
activities include the Arkansas Symphony
Orchestra, the Arkansas Repertory Theater,
Arkansas Arts Center, and the Wildwood
Park for the Performing Arts. The Riverfront Market
District on the Arkansas
River in downtown Little Rock has become a focus of many fine restaurants and evening activities as well
as the Museum of Discovery, an outstanding hands-on museum for children,
and the Clinton Presidential
Library. There are many fine
restaurants in Little Rock serving a variety of cuisines, not forgetting classic southern
barbecue ribs.
State
of Arkansas:
Arkansas
is a state of natural beauty with outdoor wilderness preserved in the state's two mountain ranges,
600,000 acres of lakes, 9,700 miles of rivers and streams, and 2.4 million acres of
national forest land. Hiking, biking, camping, fishing, canoeing and other outdoor
activities are available within an hour's drive from Little Rock. The climate
is such that one can participate in outdoor activities from February
through November, although the state does exhibit a change of seasons. About the
time one is getting tired of the cold weather, spring has arrived.
