UAMS Medical Center maintains a Contract Management/Denial Management system called Ascent. Patient demographic and financial information from the patient accounting system is fed to Ascent daily. A profile of each managed care insurance plan is built into the system. With this information, the Hospital can monitor expected insurance reimbursement versus the actual payment. The Revenue Recovery Team in the Patient Business Services Department works variance reports from the Ascent system to collect insurance underpayments and report insurance overpayments.
The Ascent system is also used to model contracts during the negotiation process. With the proposed contract built into the system, reimbursement under the current contract can be compared to various scenarios as negotiations occur.
Patient Business Services maintains a Denials Management Team to work claim denials. This team has a 69% success rate in appealing denied claims.
