MISSION:

The Mail Processing Center's mission at UAMS is to serve as representative of the campus for the United States Postal service. We endeavor to provide courteous, efficent and the cost effective service to the patients, students, faculty and staff of the University.

We are a sub-department of UAMS Telecommunications Services .

LOCATION:

The Mail Processing Center is currently located in room G 900 on ground floor of the hospital.

FUNCTION:

The UAMS Mail Processing Center exists to handle and process all incoming mail, prepare outgoing mail for the U.S. Postal Service, provide mail services within the campus, and to generally support the hospital and campus for all their mailing needs. This department is also responsible for maintaining all U.S. Postal regulations and providing postal information to campus personnel.

PROCEDURE:

U.S. Mail is collected at the Mail Center and delivered twice daily to the United States Postal Service. These pickup times are 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM. Our policy is that all first class mail recieved in the mail center by 4:00 PM will be sent out and postmarked that day.
The UAMS mail center processes roughly 25,000 pieces of mail daily. The incoming mail is sorted by slot number and placed in the departmental mail boxes with the exeption of express mail, certified mail, and similar special deliveries.

Express Mail
Express Mail is an overnight service provided by the United States Postal Service. Incoming express pieces are signed for and entered into a log, effort is then made to contact the addressee for imediate pickup. If the piece is not picked up within 24 hours, the express mail will be treated as regular first-class mail.
Our office has all the necessary paperwork to send outgoing express mail and our staff will be on hand to assist you in filling out the paperwork if necessary. The cost to send Express Mail currently starts at $13.65 for domestic mail pieces with additional charges for heavier mail pieces, or pieces going overseas.
In order to guarantee overnight service the Express Mail piece must be delivered to the UAMS Mail Processing Center before 2:00 PM.
Certified Mail
Certified, registered, insured, and other accountable mail requiring a signature is signed for and logged by a Mail Processing employee. Notice of the article is then placed in the proper departmental mail box and the article is held for a signature from a departmental employee. If the piece is not picked up within 24 hours, the accountable mail piece will be treated as regular first-class mail.
Our office has all the necessary paperwork to send insured, certified, and registered mail. The cost of these varies depending on the service required and the weight of the mail piece.
Boxes and Packages
U.S.P.S. and UPS boxes and packages that will not fit within the departmental mail boxes are set aside in the mail room and notice of the package is placed within the mail slot indicating a package to be picked up.
Individuals wishing to mail boxes and packages can do so at our office. The cost of mailing the package will depend on the weight and if the package is to be sent first-class of parcel post.
