Postal Rate Change

The US postal service last implimented a rate increase on the second week of January, 2006.

Postal costs go up like those of any other business or household. In fact increasing costs for fuel and health benefits greatly affect the Postal Service. In addition, the Postal Service is adding 1.6 million deliveries each year. The Postal Service recieves no tax dollars for operations and relies solely on the sale of its products and services to cover its operating costs.
Standard Postcards increase from $0.21 to $0.23 each.

First-Class letters, flats, and parcels will increase from $0.34 to $0.37 for the first ounce or fraction of an ounce. The additional cost remains unchanged at $0.23 for each additional ounce or fraction of an ounce.
Weight of Mail Piece Total Cost
0 oz. to 1 oz. $ 0.37
over 1 oz. to 2 oz. $ 0.60
over 2 oz. to 3 oz. $ 0.83
over 3 oz. to 4 oz. $ 1.06
Each additional ounce or fraction $ 0.23
nonmachinable surcharge of $0.12 might apply

Parcels that weigh less than 15 pounds but measure more than 84 inches in combined length and girth are charged the applicable rate for a 15-pound parcel.

The 1-pound rate is charged for matter sent in a Priority Mail flat-rate envelope provided by the USPS, regardless of the actual weight of the piece.

The flat rate for Priority mail of up to one pound will be $3.85, the cost to send other weight priority packages is dependant on the package's destination. The zoned rates will result in no change or a decrease in rates for items traveling short distances and an increase in rates for more distant items.

Overall, Priority Mail rates are proposing an increase of 13.5 percent.

The cost for certified mail will increase to $2.30 and the basic Registered mail fee will increase $7.50.
The cost for a return reciept for either service will be increased to $1.75.

The proposed rate change includes an average overall increase of 9.4 percent for Express Mail services. The cost for the first half pound under the new rate system will be $13.65. In addition, the indemnity included in the base price will be reduced from $500 to $100. This adjustment is intended to more closely align with the industry practice.
