UAMS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE CLASS OF 2004

Spring Election Ballot Information

In an effort to ensure impartiality, fairness, and accountability, the
Honor Council Representatives will observe the following procedures in
conducting this election:

* At the top of each ballot is a 3-digit number. This is your
super-secret election number. Only you will know what it is. Memorize
it.

* If you are thinking about running, please consider limiting yourself
to one office, since results for each office cannot be tallied as the
elections progress. If possible, we want to avoid having a "Florida
Election Crisis" in the next month.  Time is short for everyone.

* After nominations are taken for an office, candidates may make a
speech. In the interest of time, these will be brief.

* Once speeches are completed for an office, the next office will be
open for nominations, etc., until the elections are completed.

* Honor Council will compile a tally of the votes by your super-secret
number, on Monday afternoon. Compilation will be done by contested
position only. Only votes for nominated individuals will be counted.

* Preliminary election results will be posted to the class listserv by 9 PM
on April 16th.

* Honor Council will also compile the ballots in numerical order. If you
wish an accounting, you may compare your super-secret number with the ballot
of the same number, and with the compilation. Ballots must be returned.

* Ballots will be kept until Friday, April 20th at 5 pm. At that time,
ballots and vote compilation will be destroyed, and the election results
will be deemed final.

* Should an Honor Council Representative run for an office, he or she
will be excused from tallying the votes.

These procedures were adopted in an attempt to provide full disclosure
of the election results, while at the same time maintaining the
anonymity to which each classmate has a right.

The offices that are up for re-election are as follows:
President
2 Vice-Presidents
Secretary
Treasurer
Webmaster
Caduceus Club Representative
Can Czar
2 Associated Student Government Representatives
1 Student Advocacy Council position (4 year position)
4 Medical Student Council positions
F.A.T.E. Director

The current officers have written a short description of what their
positions involved throughout the '00-'01 school year.  If you are
considering running for a postion this may help.

President

This is a hard one, because there's really a LOT that's involved if
you're really going to work for the class...but in a nutshell, and to
somewhat quote Mac, the job of the president is to do anything he/she
can to improve the lives of his/her classmates.

Vice President

The VP's job is to plan the parties, with Cadaver Ball (next year Fungal
Formal) being the main one, and the one requiring the most work.

Secretary

The main job of the secretary is to prepare a good test book for the
incoming freshmen. The secretary must also sell and deliver the test
book to his\her own class and sell (at orientation), print and
distribute the test book to the incoming freshmen. The secretary also
needs to be willing to help the other officers in any way. The secretary
should be open to suggestions\criticism of the class and also to relay this
info to the other officers if necessary. I have already started retyping the
test book so the incoming secretary will have a start on it! I also have the
biochem exams and answers (Correct ones) ready for the new secretary so that
they will not have to worry if they haven't kept up with them.

Treasurer

The Treasurer's job is to write checks as needed, perform monthly bank
reconcilations and work with the Vice-Presidents and other officers on
the amount of money spent on parties and other activities.  The
Treasurer develops budgets for the major activites like Cadaver Ball and a
total budget for the school year.  Next school year the Treasurer will also
be involved with the new M-1 class and their funds.  A critical role the
Treasurer plays is managing the limited class funds to ensure they are spent
wisely and last for the entire school year.

Webmaster

The role of Webmaster is to create and maintain the class webpage on a
continual basis. It is helpful to have a computer at home with internet
access and Microsoft Frontpage. One of the most important tasks is to
coordinate with the faculty to post lecture slides on the web page. This
task can be very time consuming. The webmaster also attends the Dean's
meeting, serves on a computer committee with faculty to address the computer
needs of students, and solves any computer related problems that come up.
The compensation for these responibilities is currently $400 per year.

Caduceus Club Representative

Caduceus Club Representative is the student representative to the
Caduceus Club Board of Trustees. The Board meets twice a year on a
Saturday and attendance is recommended, but not required. The ladies who run
the Caduceus Club are the sweetest people ever. In the spring, the
representative is responsible for helping organize the Phonathon-
calling and asking for donations such as catered meals and prizes.

Can Czar

The role of the can czar is to take and prepare notes for any courses
that the class decides to "can."

Associated Student Government Representative

ASG representatives are responsible for attending monthly meetings with
representatives from the other four colleges at UAMS.  In these meetings we
address problems and suggestions concerning the entire student body. The
main goal of this organization is to: improve the interaction between the
five colleges, try to correct any situations that may arise, and coordinate
parties and football ticket sales.

Student Advocacy Council

SAC is responsible for sponsoring the "practice practical" for the
Freshman Gross Anatomy students, providing refreshments and a place for
freshmen and sophomores alike to meet after it's over.  SAC exists to
maintain a supportive presence to peers throughout medical school during
times of high stress.  SAC representatives offer support and
confidential early intervention to peers having an entire array of
difficulties.  SAC also sponsors programs to meet the changing needs of the
student body (such as "closed door" sessions).

Medical Student Council

We are responsible for producing a humorous video that is meant to
discuss the foibles of medical school.

F.A.T.E. Director

FATE is the program that travels the state informing young people about
HIV/AIDS/STDs.  You do not need to be an expert in these areas-
materials are provided for you.  As a director you will organize the
program and set up your team members to help with this throughout the
year.
