Liver Transplant

Before you can be considered a candidate for liver transplantation, a thorough evaluation of your physical, psychosocial, and financial status will be done on an outpatient basis. The purpose of this evaluation is to determine whether liver transplantation is the best treatment option for you. During this process, you will meet many of our team members, learn much about transplantation, undergo several tests, and have your questions addressed.

The initial evaluation will take a full day and will be arranged for you by your transplant coordinator. Please bring the following to your evaluation:

  • a family member or support person
  • a pen and paper to take notes or jot down questions
  • a calendar so you can record newly scheduled appointments
  • the name and address of your primary care physician and gastroenterologist
  • a list of your current medications
  • a copy of your health insurance policy

Various members of the liver transplant team will be available during the day to answer your questions. Based on your test results, you may be required to return to UAMS for additional testing and/or visits with one of the transplant team members. During your evaluation you will also be asked to fill out a transplant financial plan and to sign a consent form authorizing UAMS to release the medical information from your evaluation to your insurance company. You will need to return for an additional visit to complete tests that are not scheduled on your initial visit.
