Youmin Wu MD
Professor of Surgery
Division Chief, Solid Organ Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery
Director, Solid Organ Transplant Program.
Dr. Wu came to UAMS in 2004 from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa,
where he was an associate professor of surgery, chairman of the division of
transplant surgery and director of transplant research and the transplant
fellowship program. He earned his medical degree and completed a surgical
residency at Nanjing Medical University in China in 1986. He served a transplant
fellowship and a transplant clinical fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh
from 1987-1993. During his extensive time as a transplant surgeon he developed a
technique for transplantation called Cavaplasty which reduces OR time for the
patient and greatly reduces the risk of intra operative bleeding. He holds
several world records for patient survival including the youngest patient to be
transplanted- 19 days old and the oldest longest living recipient.
Wael Refai MD
Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine
Transplant Hepatologist
Dr. Wael Refai received his medical degree in 1991 from Aleppo University in
Aleppo, Syria. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship
in Clinical Nutrition at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. In
June 2004, Dr. Refai completed a fellowship in Hepatology/Transplant Medicine at
the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute, Baptist INTEGRIS Medical Center in
Oklahoma City, OK, where he continued to practice as a staff physician in the
Hepatology/Transplant Critical Care until he joined the liver transplant program
at UAMS in 2005.
Sue Belcher RN
Liver Transplant Coordinator
Sue obtained her Registered General Nursing Certification in the UK in 1985.
After working with adults in the ICU and medical surgical setting for two years
she relocated to the USA to work at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. During the 16
years she spent at ACH she was involved in many roles from bedside RN to PICU
Nursing Manager. She spent some time working in the hospitals Emergency Room and
more recently spent two years as a Dialysis Nurse dealing with Hemofiltration,
Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis. Sue worked for 12 years as one of the
hospital’s Organ Recovery Coordinators. Sue has been with UAMS in the Liver
Transplant Coordinator role since October 2004.
Gary Barone MD
Associate Professor of Vascular and Transplant Surgery
Clinical Director, Kidney and Pancreas Program
Dr. Barone graduated in 1981 with his medical degree from Howard University
College of Medicine. He completed a general surgical residency at the University
of Virginia in 1987 and a vascular residency at the University of Arkansas for
Medical Sciences in 1989. He then went on to complete a transplantation
residency at Ohio State University in 1991. He is board certified in General
Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He has been at UAMS since
1991.

Karie Denice received her General Education degree from Pensacola Junior
College in Pensacola, FL in 1990 and her Registered Medical Assistant registry
in 2003 from Eastern College of Health Vocations in Little Rock, AR. She is
registered with the American Medical Technologists and is a member of the
Transplant Financial Coordinators Association. Karie Denice has worked in the
medical field for the past 7 years in different capacities, including assistant
management. She has been with UAMS since July 2004.

Anupama Menon, MD, MPH
Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases
Dr. Menon received her Bachelors degree from Tulane University in 1994 and
her MD from Louisiana State University in 1998. Dr. Menon also has a Masters in
Public Health from Tulane University, which she received in 2003. She received
post graduate training from the Medical College of Virginia and Tulane
University. Dr. Menon is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious
Diseases. She has been with UAMS since August 2003.

Sameh Abul-Ezz MD

Dr. Abul-Ezz graduated in 1975 with his medical degree from Alexandria
University in Egypt. He completed his residency at Tulane University Affiliated
Hospitals, New Orleans, Louisiana. He continued his education with the
completion of a Nephrology fellowship at Tulane University Affiliated Hospitals
and a Transplant Nephrology fellowship at the University of British Columbia,
Canada. He started work as a Transplant Nephrologist at UAMS in 1994.
Jayant Kumar MD

Dr. Kumar earned his degree at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences,
New Delhi, India in 1991. He completed his residencies at SUNY at Stony Brook in
1993 and Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1994-95. He then completed a
fellowship in Internal Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center in 2001.
Dr. Kumar has been at UAMS since 2001 and is an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Lamps received her Bachelors degree from Davidson College in 1988, and
her MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1992. She completed her
residency and fellowship at Vanderbilt, and began her professional career there
before coming to UAMS in 1998. She is board certified by the American Board of
Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology. Areas of interest include
infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver, and molecular
diagnosis of infectious disease.

Dr. Mui received her Bachelors degree from Tulane University in 1994 and her
MD from Washington University School of Medicine in 1999. She did her clinical
training at Washington University and UAMS. Dr. Mui is board certified by the
American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology and is a member of the American
Psychiatric Association and the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. Dr. Mui has
been with UAMS since 2004.
Mohit Chopra, MD

Dr. Chopra received his training in psychiatry at the
National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in India before
coming to the United States. He did his residency training at the University of
Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, PA. After completing his residency in 2003, he
completed an inter-disciplinary fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry, also at the
University of Pennsylvania, before coming to UAMS. He is certified by the
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is a member of the American
Psychiatric Association, American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry and the
American Medical Association.
Dr. Chopra has an interest in the medically co-morbid
psychiatrically ill population.

Laura received her Bachelors degree in 1991 from Point Loma Nazarene College
in San Diego, CA and her Masters in Social Work from San Diego State University
in 1994. She completed her social work internship in May 1994 and has since
worked as a Medical Social Worker. Laura also owns and manages her own business.
She has been with UAMS since January 2005.
