Liver Service - Liver Transplant at UAMS

The Director of the UAMS Liver Service,
Dr. Youmin Wu, with three of his liver

recipient of the oldest donor
(donor was 79 years old at the time 7
years ago). The woman is the oldest
recipient with longest survival (age of
73 at the time, now 79 years old). |
Liver Service Overview
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Liver Service is a
multi-disciplinary program that includes a transplant surgeon and members of the
Department of Internal Medicine who are specialists in nephrology, hepatology,
immunology, infectious disease, cardiology, pulmonology, and a variety of
clinical subspecialties. The liver team also includes a transplant coordinator,
transplant pathologists, psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, social
workers, nutritionists, pharmacists, and floor nurses that meet in a conference
setting to discuss research, patients, and other important issues related to
liver disease and transplantation.
The liver service includes two main services - hepatobiliary surgery and
liver transplantation.

Program Events
The
first liver transplant in Arkansas was performed at UAMS on Sunday, May 14,
2005. The recipient was Greg Gilliland of Hot Springs. Dr. Youmin Wu, in
addition to the liver transplant surgical team, completed the transplant in less
than four hours. Mr. Gilliland's surgery and recovery proceeded well, with Mr.
Gilliland participating in a press conference two days after receiving a new
liver.
