Welcome to the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, located on the campus of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas.

This 100,000 square foot facility is a free-standing center dedicated to the study and treatment of the eye. Dedicated in 1994, the Jones Eye Institute provides patient care in every ophthalmic specialty while serving as the principle training site for medical students and ophthalmology resident physicians. (Additional treatment and training is provided at Arkansas Children's Hospital and the John L. McClellan Veterans Memorial Hospital which are located near the Institute.) Annual patient visits to the Jones Eye Institute's Eye Clinic now exceed 22,000 - a significant increase from 6,900 patient visits in 1980!

The modern facility serves as home for the Pat and Willard Walker Eye Research Center, which was established in 1987 and is considered a driving force behind the Department of Ophthalmology's overall growth. A broad spectrum of basic science and clinical research is ongoing, with special emphasis on ocular virology and age-related macular degeneration. The Arkansas Lions Eye Bank and Laboratory, Arkansas' only eye bank, is also located in the Jones Eye Institute. Through a nationwide network, the Eye Bank provided the gift of sight to more than 600 individuals last year alone. The Department of Ophthalmic Technologies, located in the Jones Eye Institute, is one of only seven accredited programs in the United States to provide advanced ophthalmic training for students.  The Department of Ophthalmic Technologies is a partnership between the College of Health Related Professions and The Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute that began in August, 2000.  Students receive comprehensive training in all aspects of Ophthalmic Medical Technology, leading to a B.S. degree with a major in Ophthalmic Medical Technology, and are eligible to undergo the national certification process to become a certified ophthalmic medical technologist (COMT). The Jones Eye Institute's faculty and staff are looking forward to a very bright future as we continue the fight against blindness through research, education and patient care.
