Ophthalmic TechnologyThe
Ophthalmic Medical Technology Program at UAMS is a partnership of the
College of Health Related Professions and the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye
Institute. Ophthalmic medical technologists (OMT’s) are highly skilled
members of the professional team of eye care providers. They assist the
ophthalmologists with most aspects of a patient’s eye care and have a
thorough understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human visual.
The Ophthalmic Medical Technology Program at UAMS
provides an intensive combination of didactic (lecture courses) and clinical
experiences leading to a Bachelor of Science. During the two-year program,
students accumulate more than 1900 hours of clinical training in direct
patient care. Supervised clinical rotations start in the first semester and
include training at the Jones Eye Institute, Arkansas Children’s Hospital,
and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System.
Upon completion of the program, students earn a
Bachelor of Science in ophthalmic medical technology and are eligible to
take the national certification test to earn the highest level of
certification administered by the Joint Commission on Allied Health
Personnel in Ophthalmology.
Application for admission to the Ophthalmic Medical
Technology Program should be made before May 15 of each year for admission
to the following fall semester. Additional information about the program
can be found at
