UAMS College of Pharmacy Announces Arkansas Preceptor of the Year

AUG. 30, 2002 | Edward P. Buerkle, owner of Buerkle Drugs in Stuttgart, has been named " Preceptor of the Year " for 2001-02 by the College of Pharmacy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Buerkle will receive the award at the Arkansas Pharmacists Association District 1 meeting in Little Rock on October 8. Last year, he was honored by the National Association of Community Pharmacists as the national Preceptor of the Year.

Buerkle has been a student preceptor for the
UAMS College of Pharmacy for 12 years,
and currently serves as a preceptor for seniors
in the college's Community Clinical Clerkship.
His philosophy is to teach students all the aspects of running a successful community pharmacy, not just filling prescriptions.

"I was quite prepared as a pharmacist, " he said, " but was completely inexperienced in all other aspects of a pharmacy operation, as well as other basic, common sense facts of life that you and I take for granted, such as insurance types and amounts required, investments, loans, philosophies on saving, spending and gifting money, etc. That's where I am coming from as a preceptor. "

Buerkle believes effective communication with patients is essential to being a successful pharmacist. The students who spend time in his pharmacy are encouraged to avoid medical jargon when talking to their patients. Those students are also reminded that the patients in their pharmacy may be under duress because of their medical conditions, and the pharmacist should always communicate with that thought in mind.

Buerkle is the owner of Buerkle Drugs, a community pharmacy in Stuttgart, Arkansas, begun by his father in 1947. The younger Buerkle joined his father in the family business in 1977. Buerkle's father suffered a heart attack and passed away on Christmas Day of that same year, but the early lessons learned working at his father's side continue to guide Buerkle and influence the way he mentors the students who pass through his pharmacy.

In addition to his late father, Buerkle credits the College of Pharmacy at UAMS with providing the tools necessary for his success. " The UAMS College of Pharmacy does an outstanding job of not only graduating well prepared pharmacists but keeping their pharmacists current in terms of frequent and convenient professional enhancement and continuing education opportunities, " he said.
