inspiration to her family, friends,
community and her profession. Through this gift we believe that Cammy
Giffin Haynes' light and love for nursing will shine forever.”
The Giffins donated $50,000 to the college to fully endow two
scholarships to support bachelor of science nursing students with
academic promise and financial need. Preference will be given to
graduates of Joe T. Robinson High School in Pulaski County and to
registered nurses who were graduated from Eastern Arkansas Community
College in Forrest City, Ark., and are returning to college to earn the
bachelor of science in nursing degree.
Camilla Dawn “Cammy” Giffin was born Dec. 14, 1959, to Darlene
Shepherd Giffin and Gerald (Jerry) M. Giffin in Wichita, Kansas. She was
the eldest of three children. When she was 15 years old, she had already
developed an interest in health care. In the summer of 1974 she worked
as a candy striper at University Hospital and served as a counselor at a
UAMS-sponsored summer camp for developmentally disabled children. She
was graduated from Joe T. Robinson High School in 1978. Continuing her
education, she attended the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville as a
freshman and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as a sophomore.
In the summer of 1980, Cammy married
the love of her life and her best friend, Gary W. Haynes. The young
couple moved to Gary's family farm near Brinkley. The following year
she followed her dream and enrolled at Eastern Arkansas Community
College (EACC) to major in nursing. She received the associate degree
in nursing in the spring of 1983. While attending EACC, she served as
president of the Student-Teacher Association. She was an honor
graduate.
Following graduation, Cammy worked at Baptist Hospital, Baptist Health
Care Systems in Forrest City from 1983 until 1994 as a certified
critical care nurse. Cammy loved her patients and loved nursing. In
1994, she joined Baptist Home Care in Brinkley, where she was employed
until the time of her death, August 3, 1998. Along with her full-time
employment, her other activities included: CPR instruction, patient
teaching, and in-service staff education programs. She volunteered to
present "Nursing as a Career" for the sixth grade at the
Brinkley Elementary School Annual Career Day.
Her parents note, “Cammy loved her
family and her friends.” She and Gary had three children, Jerrod
Wayne, born in 1984, Dustin Matthew (1986), and Noelle Dawn (1988),
who currently attend school in Brinkley. Cammy was vitally interested
in education. A week before her death she wrote, " I would like
to know that I have helped make a young person a productive part of
society as a working individual. I would like to be an active part of
providing a positive educational experience for all students."
