07-08-02 The Arkansas Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (AR
BRIN) today announced two grants of $200,000 each to the University of
Central Arkansas in Conway (Department of Biology) and Lyon College in
Batesville (Division of Science). The AR BRIN grants are for new
faculty recruitment and will strengthen the basic science academic
program at both institutions.
Lawrence Cornett, Ph.D., professor in
the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of
Medicine, explained, "The AR BRIN program was created last year
to expand the capacity for biomedical research in the state. We
believe this a great way to do it."
The AR BRIN program is based at the
UAMS campus in Little Rock and funded by the National Institutes of
Health (NIH), National Center for Research Resources (NCRR).
Established in the fall of 2001, the program is directed by Dr.
Cornett and UAMS biomedical researcher Helen Beneš, Ph.D.
A priority of AR BRIN is to facilitate
the development of extramurally funded research at colleges and
universities that primarily serve undergraduate students. One method
to accomplish this is to provide financial assistance for recruiting
new faculty, support their training, and sustain an institutional
commitment to a research program.
Previously, AR BRIN awarded similar
grants to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff for use in the
2002-03 academic year and to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro
for use in the 2003-04 academic year.
