ACRC
Featured in NOVA Documentary
Seen in more than
100 countries, with an average of 8.5 million
viewers per week, NOVA, a PBS documentary series,
included a segment on Bart Barlogie, M.D., Ph.D.,
director of ACRC at UAMS. The program entitled Cancer
Warrior included Dr. Barlogie for his
research on the treatment of multiple myeloma, a
cancer of the bone marrow.
The quest of Judah
Folkman, Ph.D., was the main focus of the
program. For 40 years, Dr. Folkman has sought to
develop a treatment that would block the growth
of blood vessels in cancerous tumors. The
Barlogie segment was incorporated into the
program to highlight areas of his research
supporting Folkman's idea. Barlogie has conducted
groundbreaking research treating multiple myeloma
patients with Thalidomide. He discovered the
first new successful agent in the treatment of
multiple myeloma in more than 30 years. I
am very pleased that the Arkansas Cancer Research
Center has been recognized in this way for our
hard work and dedication to fighting multiple
myeloma. We are proud and honored to be included
in this fascinating documentary, said
Barlogie.
In addition to
work at ACRC this past June, TV production for Cancer
Warrior took place at Children's Hospital in
Boston, Northwestern Medical School in Chicago
and the University of Wisconsin Cancer Center in
Madison.
